About Isla de Lobos Natural Park

Isla de Lobos Natural Park, located 8 kilometers southeast of Punta del Este, Uruguay, is the country’s southernmost island and the largest sea lion colony in the southwestern Atlantic. The roughly 18-hectare islet is protected under Uruguayan law to preserve its unique marine ecosystem, particularly its abundant population of South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens) and South American fur seals. The island's rocky shores and rugged terrain provide ideal haul-out and breeding sites for these marine mammals, making it a vital ecological habitat. Besides pinnipeds, the waters surrounding Isla de Lobos teem with diverse marine bird life, including cormorants, seagulls, and terns, adding to its ecological significance. Visitor access to the island itself is highly restricted to protect sensitive wildlife, but boat tours from Punta del Este allow close-up wildlife viewing and photography opportunities. Visitors can enjoy guided sea lion watching excursions, as well as scenic boat rides to observe the island's natural beauty and marine biodiversity. The park is also valuable for scientific research and environmental education focused on marine conservation. Isla de Lobos offers a unique coastal experience, combining wildlife observation with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, making it a memorable destination for nature lovers and eco-tourists visiting southeastern Uruguay.
